April Fools' fools

Peace be upon you.

I recently received an email which has been "playing on my mind" (unfortunately there is not alot of things that play on my mind-so this may seem very trivial) but i just needed a soapbox to stand on and voice my thoughts and feelings.

The email was titled "April Fools Day" and was sent to me on the 16th of March, so although the idiot that wrote this email aptly named it (you will see later on why that in itself is a feat not to be scoffed at) he/she/"it" still got the calender a bit wonky. The content of the email, which honestly doesn't even deserve any space on my little blog, condemned April Fools' Day as a day that Christians celebrate in honor of "defeating and colonizing Spain" from the hands of the Muslims. If this is not enough of an insult to our intellect, the email further speaks of how the Christians gave the Muslim Spaniards alcohol which was greatly consumed by youth and weakened the "taqwa" of the muslims which led to their defeat and that is why it "wrong" to celebrate this day.

Now before i give my two-cent worth of opinion, let me just give a little backround to this day. Up untill the late sixteenth century most of the world largely bassed their calenders on the equinox hence in many cultures the their new year is from the last week of March till 1st April, comonly referred to as New Years' Week. there are some ancient cultures that still acknowledge this week. During 1582, Pope Gregory XIII declared that the new year would begin on the 1st January, and this is the calendar we follow (hence referred to as the Gregorian Calendar). When this change came into effect many people did not know of it or were not too pleased about the change and stayed with tradition. These people were very much in the minority and were mocked at by the majority who followed the new calendar. This mockery which later evolved into prank invitations was labelled "poisson d'avril" which is French for "April Fish" (the reason for this was that a young fish is easily caught) and often a drawing of a fish was stuck onto the backs of people caught. Eventually this became a widely accepted day of pranking and different cultures even formed different types of light-hearted traditions which continues in the form of silly pranks today.

The History of Spain is one of great importance but great length and i have been asked to keep my postings shorter so no space for that here. Needless to say however that there is absolutely no connection between Spain, April Fools' Day, youth and alcohol (well, youth and alcohol may sometimes be synonymous-and April Fools' Day another quencher in the thirst for stupid excuses- but Spain and any part of the Islamic Empire has absolutely no significance to this light-hearted day).

Now the question I pose to all three of you reading this page is this: "why would someone pull such a load of crap out of thin air and what did they aim to achieve?" Maybe it was someone who feels that we should comdemn all youth to hell, or possibly that alcohol is going to destroy the world, or possibly that email was a pre-emtive April Fools Day message, or maybe it was just a really sad, lonely and depressed person who hates seeing other people enjoy a fun day of pranks. In the latter case we should all go give that person a warm hug and tell them the world loves them. So if you are one of the unfortunate people to receive such an email-reply to the person who sent it to you and tell them just that-"the world loves you, it is not out to get you, peace be upon you".

So, happy pranking to all you wonderful people and remember, the world loves you.
